Why Go Green?
May 27, 2011 by Maria Valenzuela · Leave a Comment
Green homes may look like just like any other home, but the truth is that there is something more going on inside compared to traditional ones. You might be asking if it’s going to pay off. Definitely, green homes will more likely sell quicker and at the upper end of the range. Going green means you can save energy and money, you can save your health, and you can save the planet as well.
The ‘green’ movement is nothing new in this age because it has been around for years and for some homeowners, going ‘green’ means benefits and more savings for their homes. However, a majority of people think that this going green means spending more and is just a waste of time. On the other side, there are some who are turning to this ‘tree-hugging’ reality after the price of gasoline, commodities, heating and electricity have gone up.
Simply using energy efficient lighting and plumbing fixtures can increase your savings and add value to a house. And there are more ways on how to go green.
Update your appliances like refrigerator, stove, washer, dryer, dishwasher, and oven toaster from the seventies and eighties with modern, ‘Energy Star’ efficient ones. You won’t only see the long term effects of saving dollars but you will increase the value of your home as well. If it’s possible for you to generate your own energy through alternative sources like the sun, geothermal, or wind then that would be great. Use building materials that are toxin-free like natural linoleum made from linseed oil and jute, straw board made from wheat and insulating material made from recycled paper, old denim and even soybeans.
Green living is an attempt to carry out one’s life in an eco-friendly, environmentally responsible manner in order to minimize the size of ones ecological footprint. A lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual’s or society’s use of the Earth’s natural resource and his/her own resources. In other words, ‘green’ living is sustainable living.

What is a Green Home?
December 2, 2009 by Adam Pascu · Leave a Comment
There are so many ways to make a home green. The major concepts involve making a home sustainable, optimizing your energy efficiency, creating a healthy air-space, and reducing carbon footprint. Read below for a brief explanation of these terms and then visit my green housing website for practical applications and more.
A home is built sustainably if it has a very small effect or no bad effect on the environment. Use materials that are biodegradable that won’t end up in a land fill when their use is up. Choose materials that can be produced and reproduced quickly like bamboo floors instead of normal hardwood. Use Insulated concrete foam, straw bale, adobe or steel as the structural frame instead of traditional wood frames. Re-use or recycle old materials whenever possible.
Minimizing energy usage is a huge part of going green. Using energy efficient appliances is a great option when replacing appliances. Start with basics like replacing incandescent light bulbs with more efficient fluorescents or halogen lighting. Build solar tubes in your home to bring in more natural light so that you don’t need light bulbs at all! Use appliances in off-peak hours. Remember that most of our electricity currently comes from the burning of fossil fuels that are not renewable.
A healthy environment is a green environment. We must be careful of off-gassing that can happen with paints and other materials used in home construction or remodels. We must make sure to have proper air circulation and filtration. Use washable air filters in forced air units. Make sure your home and ducts are properly insulated. Buy an air purifier to increase air quality.
In everything we do, we must remember the carbon footprint we leave. When purchasing remodeling materials, seek materials and companies that believe in producing their products in eco-friendly ways. Also, it is always best to buy local because less transportation means less pollution.
