Winter is right around the corner and you’re probably thinking that it’s time to start making sure that your home is not drafty. You may also be someone who is concerned about reducing their carbon footprint. This article will show you how to reduce your carbon foot print with sash window draught proofing this winter.

When winter arrives, people who live in geographical areas that get very cold must heat their homes much more often than they do in the summer. In order to do this, they must run their furnace more often in order to heat the air in their homes. And when their furnace runs it uses fuel.

Using more fuel to run your furnace in the winter results in a larger carbon footprint though too. That’s because you must burn the fuel in order to get the heat for your home, and when you burn something, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are formed. Each time your furnace runs, it increases the carbon footprint of your home.

When the winter season arrives in parts of the country that get colder than what most would consider a comfortable temperature, you must heat your home in order to keep it at a comfortable temperature. But the better insulated your home is, the less heat will be lost to the cold environment, and the less you’ll have to run your furnace.

Pretty much everyone knows that your home must be well-insulated in order to keep your home from having to be heated constantly in the winter. But most people overlook the less obvious areas in which your home loses a lot of heat. Your windows are the main culprits.

The outside of the windows can be sealed well with caulk, so those areas won’t be drafty. But the place where the window is supposed to open from and close against can’t be sealed, so heat can escape through it. However, if you place a simple window sash in front of that spot (at the bottom of your window), then you can prevent heat from escaping through that spot.

It is a good idea to reduce your carbon foot print with sash window draught proofing this winter. It’s a less obvious area for heat loss, but it can be a significant one. The sashes can be made by hand or bought in stores, and they’re easy to install since they only need to be placed at the bottom of the windows, on the window sills.

Many feel that old, double-hung sash windows are a necessary feature on ‘period’ homes. They should never be replaced except as a final solution after everything else has been tried. They’re worth saving for lots of reasons and they’re not too difficult to restore. Here’s how sash windows work, or, sometimes, don’t work.

Some guy who makes his living restoring older homes was once overheard saying that people who lived in older homes often have never seen some of their windows (or all of them) work as was intended when they were first installed. The good news is this isn’t that difficult or expensive to remedy. Some repairs you might do yourself.

Sometimes the only thing keeping a window from working is too many coats of paint. Maybe it’s been painted shut or had so many layers painted on that it’s gotten gunked up. Some paint remover, a blade and a scraper could go a long way to fixing the problem if it’s that simple.

One common problem with old sash windows is the internal system of weights and chains (or ropes) getting old and tired. If only one side breaks it might still work a little (just not easily), but if both sides are broken you’ll most likely get no movement. The weights are used as a counter-balance to the weight and movement of the sashes. Access to the chains or ropes and weights is made through a cover plate on the frame.

The cords (or chains) that the counter-weights hang on will normally break during their lifetime of service, but they can be replaced fairly easily. If you’re handy you might be able to do this one yourself, DIY style. You know, after a hundred years or so those ropes are going to be tired! It’s fairly straightforward to replace them.

Here’s the best advice on old double-hung sash windows. Repair rather than replace. The windows have already lasted a good long time and they can last that long again if given proper restorative maintenance. Do you think modern replacement windows could stand that test of time? It’s doubtful. And new windows just don’t look right on an old house!

Here’s just one more tip. If you’re going to hire someone to repair or restore your windows, hire someone who does that kind of work exclusively. You want someone who’s part finish-carpenter, part artist and part decorator. You want a specialist in old window restoration. He’ll know just how sash windows work or, at least how they’re supposed to work. And he’ll have them working like that again, too. Find yourself a good restoration guy. They’re out there.

Many home owners would be very surprised to find out about all the environmental benefits of sash window restoration. Indeed, the conservation of original sash windows can be a much better choice than spending money on new windows. Ironically, while many new window products are advertised with environmental credentials, the most environmentally friendly approach is to restore original sash windows.

The disruptions to your home tend to be less when restoring sash windows rather than replacing them. Installing new windows can disturb structural plaster. Any damage to walls will have to be fixed, resulting in more expenditure and greater environmental impact.

How new windows are made has environmental implications as well. Many new windows are made of PVC. Choosing to forgo the production of more plastic by restoring old windows rather than buying new ones is a better choice.

While some new window frames are made of wood, these also have an effect on the environment. The issue of deforestation can be tackled by reusing old wood products rather than purchasing them new. It’s also worth noting that many old wood window frames are of a superior construction to new ones.

Sash window restoration has an effect not just on ecology but on the immediate environment of the neighborhood. Aesthetically speaking, restored window frames are a better option than new PVC-type frames. The former looks better and compliments surrounding houses. Old sash windows also look suitable for the age of your property, whereas new window frames can look out of place.

The way sash windows operate allows them to adjust to fluctuations in temperature. During hot summer weather, opening each sash helps to keep the temperature inside at a comfortable level. This lets cool air in through the bottom while warm air escapes out through the upper sash. It is plain to see that sash windows have more environmental advantages than air conditioning systems or fans. Some minor adjustments to your sash windows can improve thermal efficiency. For instance, adding extra glazing and sealing can provide more insulation.

These are just some of the environmental benefits of sash window restoration. They are good news for your pocketbook too. Many times, restoring original features is much cheaper than installing them new. You can find contact details for sash window restoration experts online or in a telephone directory.

A lot of the latest window and door products are geared towards thermal efficiency in an effort to appeal to environmentally conscious consumers. Nevertheless, deciding to recondition original sash windows as an alternative to buying new ones can be better for the environment. The environmental benefits of sash window restoration are noteworthy.

Many house owners opt to replace wooden sash windows with PVC frames. However, preserving old wooden windows instead of paying for the production of new PVC is a better choice for the environment.

Even if you decide on wooden frames rather than PVC to replace sash windows, there are environmental issues. The problem of deforestation means that to recycle old wood is a more eco-friendly choice than using new wood. As well, old wood window frames may be of superior quality to new wood products.

The advantages of restoring sash windows pertain not just to the natural environment but to the built environment. To many people, wood is more attractive than PVC. Furthermore, sash windows add authenticity to an old house.

If you are concerned about insulation, there are many adjustments which can be made to existing sash windows to reduce heat loss. For instance, double or triple glazing provides extra insulation and sound proofing. Sealing windows can help to exclude drafts.

The sash window design provides great ventilation. During the summer, you can open the sashes on the bottom and the top to help your house stay cool. That way, warm air can escape through the top of the window. Meanwhile, cool air is let into the house through the bottom sash. This system can mean you won’t need to use air conditioning or a fan. The design of sash windows helps them to be an environmentally friendly choice.

A major benefit of sash windows can best be described as allowing the house to breathe. This is important for maintaining a comfortable and healthy atmosphere inside. In contrast, some modern window replacements are virtually airtight. This can lead to problems with ventilation and the build up of condensation. Good ventilation is important for health. It also prevents excess moisture from accumulating. A damp problem in plaster and woodwork can be very damaging and expensive.

These are just a few of the environmental benefits of sash window restoration. It’s also worth noting that restoring old windows is often less expensive than installing new ones. An Internet search will help you to locate sash window restoration companies near you. A number of these companies will give you a quotation at no cost.

Sash window restoration London area provides a service to homeowners who want to protect the environment. Instead of replacing or discarding sash windows, you can restore them instead.

Sash window restoration is not such a commonplace art any more. With everyone scaling up, making room for more, and replacing the old with the new even before considering its value, the sash window has suddenly become an iconic piece of art work.

The sash window has been seen by most of us at one time or another. We often recognize it by sight rather by name. It is a window created generally of six small panes that are stacked in two rows of three. These squares of glass are held tightly together by small, thin pieces of wood that we call muntin. These muntin are part of the window’s structure and often require small restorative efforts as well.

Sash window restoration can involve replacing a single pane of glass or it might quantify something more complex. A single pane of glass can often be replaced provided that it is cut to size and can be measured directly into the muntin bar supports.

Despite this arrangement the sash window is not drafty the way one would think. A good restoration should also remain tight from the wind. There are some customary replacements rather than restorations that have become commonplace. The restoration of a sash window that requires more than have of its panes replaced is often eliminated and replaced with a casement window.

These are not drafty windows nor are they particularly poor at insulating, even when they are in their original condition. You can always tell a high quality sash window restoration by the look and feel of the seal. If there is no seal, air comes in through the window.

Sash window restoration has become an art form as there are fewer skilled crafts people that can truly handle the job. Fortunately, the sash window is still iconic enough that more people are looking toward restoration over replacement.
