Small Towns On The Jersey Shore – Great Places to Live
January 20, 2010 by Stephen Daniels · Leave a Comment
When someone mentions the Jersey Shore area, many people think of popular Atlantic City with its resorts, casinos and the famous boardwalk that inspired the game of Monopoly. What they may not consider are all the small towns on the New Jersey coast. These little beachfront burbs offer great views and gorgeous beaches as well as plenty of activities, yet they have the hometown charm that many people find desirable.
Sea Isle City is a great example of this. Featuring five miles of beautiful beaches and about 3,000 year round residents, Sea Isle is located in Cape May County, the southernmost New Jersey county. Despite its size, the town affords lots of fine dining and a thriving nightlife. Water sports, deep sea fishing, boutique shopping, and a boardwalk with lots of family activities, along with its famous European charm, makes this city a popular destination for summer getaways. It also features many unique festivals throughout the year that residents and visitors alike can enjoy. The vibrant summer life and the quiet, relaxing off-season make this a great place to live or own a vacation home.
If you desire a place to truly escape city life, you might fall in love with the town of Barnegat Light. At the southern tip of Long Beach Island in Ocean County, this tiny Jersey Shore village has just 800 year round residents, including vacation operators and some retirees. Barnegat Lighthouse State Park features the second tallest lighthouse in the United States as well as one of the last remaining vestiges of maritime forest on the island. A popular attraction in this town is fishing, due to the array of saltwater fish that can be caught from the shore or from a charter boat in the region. Tennis, boating, birdwatching or just catching some sun on the beach are pleasant pastimes for both visitors and residents.
If you’d prefer to make your home in a small Jersey Shore town but still work in the big city, Highlands in northern Monmouth County might be a good fit. Only a 40 minute ferry ride from Wall Street makes it a great option for commuters. It’s located right across the bay from Sandy Hook Beach, which features seven miles of coastline. The town has about 5,000 year round residents, and offers a vibrant nightlife and lots of options for lovers of the outdoors. It also boasts several resorts, hotels, and fine seafood restaurants, a unique maritime museum, and the first twin lighthouse ever built – aptly named Twin Lights.
If you are searching for a residential beachfront town with city convenience close at hand, Longport, New Jersey is a great choice. While it’s just five minutes from the shopping at Somer’s Point and the attractions of Ocean City, and only fifteen minutes from Atlantic City, is is still a quiet town with 1,100 residents and no hotels. Tranquil beaches and a relaxing atmosphere make it a great place to live or visit.
These charming small towns afford many excellent options for either vacation homes or permanent relocation. Once you’ve decided which area suits you best, contact a local real estate agent for expert assistance in finding the Jersey Shore home of your dreams.
